Sarpanch Sharmi Bai, representing Nichlagarh Gram Panchayat, Sirohi District and the Hunger Project met with US President Barrack Obama at an Expo on Democracy and Open Government on 7th November 2010 at Xavier’s College, Mumbai.
The Hunger Project was invited to highlight the critical role played by Panchayat elected women representatives in bringing local governments closer to people through their developmental initiatives. Its Country Director, Rita Sarin informed President Obama about Sarpanch Sharmi Bai’s efforts in ensuring education of girl children in her Panchayat. President Obama carried back with him sarpanch Sharmi Bai’s profile and her list of achievements which include proper implementation of MNREGA, generating awareness on domestic violence and conducting social audits in her panchayat.
The Expo for Democracy and Open Government highlighted key Indian innovations that strengthen democracy, focusing on the intersection of technology, citizen empowerment, and accountability.
