In the year 2008-2009, THP in collaboration with SKL International, SIPU and its seven partners viz. a viz. ASTRA, ASEDA, BWS, ODP, ORBIT, SUMANA and VIKASANA planned to facilitate the federation building process in a structured manner.
In April 2008 an interim steering Committee of 7 elected women representatives from 7 districts was set up. A larger working group with representation from THP, SALAI DA, SIPU, 7 partner organizations and the interim steering committee was also formed.
The interim steering committee, 7 partners and THP representatives met every month from June 2008 to April 2009 to discuss the vision, mission, objective and structure of the federation. The interim steering committee has worked hard to develop the bye laws of the federation. Each clause has been discussed, debated and shared with taluk federations. The interim steering committee has also developed the working principles of the federation which states that the federation will not discriminate on grounds of religion and caste, it values the principles of gender and social justice and it will promote transparency in its work.
The state federation was formed and has been named SUGRAMA – Grama Panchayat Chunayita Mahila Okkuta Karnataka. With almost 5000 members it is ready to register the state federation under the Societies Registration Act of Karnataka. 5000 members belonging to 87 Taluk federations across 21 districts have nominated a Steering Committee of 22 members. This steering committee has elected its seven office bearers who will be responsible for the day to day activities of the federation.
On 27th May 2009, the members of the SUGRAMA – Grama Panchayat Chunayita Mahila Okkuta Karnataka launched the Karnataka state federation of elected women representatives.
