Need-based Workshops

Once the EWRs have gained familiarity with the political environment around them, they begin to identify issues and concerns that typify lacuna in development in their areas. Need-based workshops (NBWs) are thematic workshops conducted in the second and third years of the election cycle that address contextual concerns expressed by the elected women. Some of these concerns describe gaps in access to development schemes and programmes such as the NREGS and food security; some are related to understanding tools to gain access to rights and entitlements such as the Right to Information Act and the Domestic Violence Act; some are more subjective concerns that have been hidden from the development agenda such as sex-selective abortion, domestic violence and, ethnic strife. The objective of these workshops is to enable elected women to develop an understanding on these issues and use their positions as elected representatives to raise and address these in public decision-making fora.
